Many reasons may lead to patients being treated in an ICU. Some of the most common are shock, Respiratory Failure & Infection.
In the ICU , Patients are very ill. Healthcare Professionals can easily monitor their vital signs through their connection to a number of monitors on a minute by minute basis. The infusion of medications and fluids into veins of patients is often achieved by placing intravenous tubes ( IV) in their arms and necks. They usually have a tube placed into their bodies to drain and collect urine. A patient may be connected to a breathing machine or dialysis machine. Patients may also receive liquid food directly into their stomachs through a tube placed in their nose or mouth.Sedating medications are commonly administered in order to help them cope with tubes, IV’s and life support.
